Yesterday my little Grace had her first day of kindergarten…and she did great walking in. There were no tears, no fears, just all out excitement. I was SO proud and excited for her.
Well, this morning was a different story. As we walked into the kindergarten’s play yard, she started expressing how she was scared of all of the “Stranger Parents” that were watching her…eventhough she was holding my hand the whole time. Shocker of all, she didn’t even want to go to the play yard to run around with all of the other kids!
Was this the same child?
Is it possible?
And as the bell rang for all of the little backpack toting kiddles to line up along the wall…she held back not wanting to leave my side.
Honestly, it was kind of a good feeling, knowing that she wanted to stay with me…but I knew that this wasn’t like my child. This was not the same little girl that wants to be at school every day…twice a day if I would let her.
So I took a moment, pulled her from the line-up, gave her a hug & kiss and told her, “You’re super smart and I know that you’re going to do GREAT today! Now, go have fun with the other kids in your class. You can do this!”
I think it kinda worked…at least until she saw that same little guy from yesterday being chased around the yard by his dad to get him into the classroom. That dad could move! He must have a little bit of herder in him…there’s no way that I would have been able to catch his little guy.
So it’s an hour until I pick her up from school again…and I’m praying that today she is overflowing with excitement to tell me about her day. (she just needs to get the hang of it)

Wow! Your kid started school already? My daughter starts kindergarten in September. I am super nervous for it too. I know that she is going to be super excited on the first day but I am worried about the second day. I hope that her second day ended up to be a good day after all!

Yeah, we’re on a year round tract system out here…which is kind of nice since we get three 5 week breaks during a year. I made the mistake of not letting her know that there were going to be new rules in her teacher’s class, and to listen very carefully, so the first day was a little tough…the second started out rough (as you read) but ended up wonderful! She got a “HOWL” from her teacher (when she gets 5 she gets a prize) for being the best listener and follower during the two kindergarten classes’ combined time. I was SO proud of her. And then another one today! That’s 3 so far this week!!!
I’m sure that your daughter is going to love it…it’s just getting used to all of the “new” things and rules they have to do/follow that’s tricky. Where does all the time go?!
