After two weeks of searching through gluten free products…I finally found a bread that my little Grace loves! And until I get all of the ingredients I need to m ake my own, it looks like I’ll be making trips to Whole Foods for bread.

The bread:  Berlin Natural Bakery’s Old Fashioned Sourdough Spelt Bread

It runs about $5.00 a loaf…not a cheap little loaf of bread.  But right now it is worth it.  This bread actually tastes like a whole wheat sourdough. Perfect! No gritty, chalky taste at all.

In fact, she loves it so much that it’s become her request with strawberry jam for every meal.  (that request is been denied for lunch and dinner, but breakfast is cleared every time)  It even works well for making garlic bread!

Just when I think I have my solution (although grace may be able to tolerate a little of it)…UPDATE & CORRECTION!

It was brought to my attention that there was a question of whether spelt was really gluten-free…so I did a little research.  Here’s what I found out:

  • Spelt: [Triticum spelta] (WHEAT, dinkle, farro, dinkel) Ancient cereal grain with a mellow nutty flavor. (1)
  • Can people who are allergic to wheat eat spelt?  Maybe.
Spelt is related to wheat, although it is not identical to modern wheat. Some people who are allergic to wheat may be able to tolerate some spelt, or a lot of spelt. (2)
  • Is spelt a safe substitute for people with celiac disease? NO. (1)(2)
  • It is easier to digest than wheat because it is more water soluble.  (3)

It seems that Grace is doing really well with this spelt flour bread…the last thing I want to do is share misinformation with anyone.  Perhaps her system isn’t having a problem with the gluten found in it.  And her circles are diminishing under her eyes!

Here is a site that I now have saved for my Gluten-Free information: Grain & Flour Glossary

Good to know! No one in my family is actually gluten-intolerant but I prefer gluten-free products anyways. I’ll have to try this one out!

Thank you Sharon! I did some more research and found that you were indeed correct. And I’ve modified my posting.
For celiacs, this is definately NOT alright.
For some people who are allergic to wheat, this might be alright. Thanks again for the head’s up.

This is great! I was actually just on a MomTv show and I was saying how a doctor recently told me that if a person is trying to lose weight, Sourdough is just as good as Whole Grain bread. She went into this long explanation as to why but I didn’t hear it because I was making a sandwich in my head.
